‘Introspective’
is a seven-part series of small format oil paintings, that give the
viewer an insight into a studio or rather a workshop. Fragmented rooms
are shown filled with things, sculptures and a protagonist.
You become the observer of a tightly compact atmosphere.
When approaching the small images closely you can recognise
that they portray the artist Alberto Giacometti. In
black and white, the distinctive settings of the lights and shadows of
the cluttered rooms are intensified and suggest a before and after of
the depicted moments. Detached, the paintings have a white border,
which is evidence that is it in fact about images, reproductions from
a book. The works are painted partly
glazed, partly pastose in a way that they stimulate tensions with the
subject – it is not about accurate and quick recognitions of the
pictured scenes, but rather about the possibility of empathizing with
the artistic process. The viewer becomes in that way a participator.
